Description
Workshop Date: Saturday, October 25th, 9am-11am
If you’ve been tempted to start growing dahlias, but can’t wrap your head around the concept of storing said dahlias over the winter, I’m here to help. I’ve planted, dug, and stored thousands of tubers and learned many hard lessons along the way. I’m offering a hands on workshop where you’ll learn exactly how to dig up your dahlia clumps, clean and inspect them for disease, divide and store them for the winter.
The Details:
–Â This 2 hour workshop will consist of a hands on lesson on digging, cleaning, dividing, and storing dahlia tubers. Proper attire is required, as we will be digging up dahlia clumps. Please provide your own pitchfork as we do not have enough for each of you.
- Each attendee will learn to, and then dig up one or more clumps from our working farm. These have been in production in our UPick flower fields since May.
- We will dig up clumps from many different varieties, which will how you the different ways tubers grow and multiply underground.
- The clumps will then be cleaned to clearly show the anatomy of the clump.
- I will show how I identify viable tubers, and divide them to maximize my plants for next year. You will then get to practice on a clump.
- Each attendee will receive a brand new pair of Felco snips to use and then take home!
- We will practice labeling individual tubers for easy IDing next spring
- I will go over the different ways to store tubers, and the pros and cons of each.
- Once several varieties have been divided, attendees will get to choose several to take home for next spring.
